New study on floodplains released

The Nature Conservancy in Missouri and the University of Bristol in England have released a new study about floodplains.

The study says that it's cheaper to buy and protect floodplains than it is to let them be developed. Strategy Manager for Floodplains and Nature-Based Solutions for the Nature Conservancy in Missouri, Barbara Charry, says the study looked at floodplain land that hadn't been developed, as well as areas projected to have major development over the next 50 years.

"In those areas, is it going to be more cost effective to buy that land and protect it or to allow them to be developed developed and then deal with the future costs of flood damages."

Ultimately, the study found that for every one dollar invested to protect floodplains, that saves at least five dollars in potential future flood damages.
